Controller (Manufacturing/Retail Industry)

A rapidly growing multi-entity manufacturing and retail organization in the Mid-Atlantic region is seeking a seasoned Controller to join its finance leadership team. This is a key role for an experienced accounting professional with a strong background in managing complex financial operations across multiple business units. This will be a hybrid position with 1 day onsite and 4 days remote each week.

About the Role:

The Controller will lead a team of three direct reports (part of a 9-person finance and accounting department), overseeing full-cycle accounting and compliance for twelve (12) affiliated entities. This role includes oversight of general ledger management, treasury functions, payroll, intercompany consolidations, and support for external audits — all in accordance with GAAP.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead daily operations of the accounting team (9 total staff; 3 direct reports).
• Review and approve journal entries and account reconciliations across 12 entities.
• Manage intercompany transfers, cash flow, and banking relationships.
• Review and approve bi-weekly payroll for 200+ employees.
• Prepare for and manage the annual financial audit.
• Maintain and improve internal controls and accounting policies.
• Lead the monthly consolidation and intercompany elimination process.
• Deliver timely and accurate financial reporting, including monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
• Provide technical accounting guidance and partner with external advisors when needed.
• Drive performance management and professional development across the team.

Leadership & Collaboration:

• Partner with HR on performance reviews, team development, and policy implementation.
• Provide coaching and mentoring to foster a culture of accountability and growth.
• Monitor performance metrics, identify gaps, and develop action plans.

Required Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• Active CPA or CMA certification.
• 10+ years of progressive accounting experience in a manufacturing or retail environment.
• 5+ years of leadership experience, including managing multi-entity accounting functions.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, including ASC 606, ASC 740, and ASC 842.
• Experience managing external audits and treasury functions.
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, XLOOKUPs, charts).
• Experience with ERP systems and cost accounting practices.
